Thieves targeting electrical cable feeding Perth’s street lights are putting lives at risk.

Main Roads is urging the public to report any suspicious activity around street lights on Perth’s major roads, following a run of instances where people have tampered with street lighting and stolen underground electrical cable.

Main Roads Managing Director, Stephen Troughton, said "The culprits are opening concrete wiring pits and switchboards to cut and remove wiring.”

"This is concerning because in some of the locations, live wiring has been left exposed, posing a potential safety risk to anybody who comes into contact with it.

“In addition, uncovered pits also pose a hazard.”

He said 10 sites had been targeted on the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways between Joondalup and Mandurah.

People observing suspicious activity at these sites are asked to relay the information to Main Roads on 138 138 or the Police on 131 444.
